In mostcountries, the main objective of the economy is the productionof food, clothes, furniture, and luxury goods.Simple rules are given for the interaction between men andwomen. Most importantly, the inheritance of property by maleand female descendants is regulated by testaments—not bycomplicated, gendered, and unjust inheritance laws as they arecherished by our honourable fuqah§".In short, a true Islamic revival means endorsing moral and socialvalues that foster civil society, in the shape of welfare organisations,trade unions, NGO’s, community groups, business associations, selfhelpgroups, coalitions, and advocacy groups. Unfortunately, generationsof #ulam§" have failed to turn al-isl§m into a universally applicableand practical religion. Instead, they have promoted the values ofslavish ritualism and a mentality of flight from this world to the Next,that is, a form of escapism that left them unable to give commonpeople guidance on how to fulfil their aspirations in this world. Webelieve that this mentality of escapism and slavish ritualism is thereason why political Islam and the Islamist movement will fail to getoverwhelming support of the majority of the population in mostcountries of this world.A true reawakening of faith ( al-ßaÈwa al-Êm§niyya), a revival thatdoes not exhaust itself by an increase in ritualistic performancesthrough prayer, fast, and pilgrimage, is characterized by:1.2.An increase in the number of people who fast during the monthof Ramadan and who disburse the month-specific voluntarydonations because al-Êm§n (in this respect) means (also) wealthand welfare.An increase in the number of people who pay alms tax becauseal-Êm§n means wealth and welfare. Since voluntary donationsand the ritual of zak§h are essentially social activities unitingsociety by means of charity money, it is—unlike prayer, fasting,and pilgrimage—also an activity of al-isl§m, and not just exclusivelyof al-Êm§n.
