350chapter sixIn his al-Iߧba fÊ tamyÊz al-ßaȧba, al-#Asqal§nÊ writes for exampleabout al-Ash#ath b. Qays:Al-Ash#ath b. Qays b. Ma#d Yukarrib al-KindÊ[h], called by theagnomen Abå MuÈammad, had visited the Prophet (ß) with seventycamel corps from Kind[ah]. He was one of the kings ofKind[ah] and was chief of the \a·ramawt. Al-Bukh§rÊ and Muslimreported about him in their ‘aÈÊÈ [ÈadÊth collections]. He hadapostacized together with others from Kind[ah] and was arrested. When he was brought to Abå Bakr, Abå Bakr freed him and marriedhis sister to him. So, he [ al-Ash#ath] drew his sword, enteredthe camel market and hamstrung every male and female camel[he came across]. The people shouted: “Al-Ash#ath has rejected[i.e., apostacized]!”. After he had finished, he threw his swordaway and said: “I, by God, did not reject [i.e., apostatise], but thisman [i.e., Abå Bakr] has married his sister to me. If we were inour land, the feast would be different than this. O people ofMadina! Eat! … and you camel owners, take their bodies!” Hevisited al-Yarmåk and al-Q§disiyyah, and [also] ‘iffÊn, togetherwith #AlÊ. He died in the year 42 [Hijra] after #AlÊ was assassinated."19And al-#Asqal§nÊ tells us about #Uyayna b. \ißn:Uyaynah b. \ißn b. \uzayfah al-Faz§rÊ, called Abå M§lik, wasamong the converts [to the new religion] [ al-mu"allafat al-qulåb]. Hewas one of the Prophet’s companions but his narration [of ÈadÊth]was not valid. He became a Muslim before the seizure [of Mecca]and took part in the seizure of Mecca, [the battles of ] \unaynand al-•§"if. He was among those who apostacized during thereign of Abå Bakr. He inclined towards •ulayÈah and gave allegianceto him. In him was the harshness of the desert [Bedouins].Ibr§hÊm al-Nakha#Ê said: “#Uyaynah b. \ißn came to the Prophet(ß), while #$"isha was with him, and said: ‘Who is this woman sittingnext to you?’ He [the Prophet] replied: ‘#$"isha’. He said: ‘DoI not come to you with a better [woman] than her?’ he meant his[own] woman, Umm al-BanÊn.” I read in al-Sh§fi#Ê’s Kit§b al-ummthat #Umar b. al-Khaãã§b killed #Uyayna b. \ißn due to [his] apostasy, but I did not find anyone else who mentioned that. Instead,#Uyaynah lived until #Uthm§n’s caliphate… 2019This is a summarised version of AÈmad B. \ajar al-#Asqal§nÊ, al-Iߧba fÊ tamyÊzal-ßaȧba (Cairo: Maktabat al-Kulliyyat al-Azhariyyah, n.d.), vol. 1, 79.20This is also a summarised version from the same source, al-#Asqal§nÊ, al-IߧbafÊ tamyÊz al-ßaȧba, vol. 7, 195–96.
