Chesapeake College January 2012 Facilities Master Plan UpdateFIRE ALARM SYSTEMRevise and revamp all existing fire alarm systems with a state of the art addressable system to provide a centralannunciator and remote monitoring system. This can be accomplished when replacing fire alarm systems as existingbuildings are renovated and also by tying existing fire alarm systems into the central annunciator/monitoring system.SECURITY SYSTEMInstall closed circuit TV surveillance system with central monitoring station. Portions of the security surveillancesystem could be installed as new buildings are built or buildings renovated.ELECTRICAL SYSTEM TESTINGSchedule annual testing of the medium voltage (25kV) system and components such as switchgear, transformersand cables.TRANSFORMER ENCLOSURESThe brick enclosures surrounding medium voltage switchgear and transformers should be removed and/or replaced.5‐8
Chesapeake College January 2012 Facilities Master Plan UpdateTECHNOLOGY SYSTEMSGENERAL ANALYSISVIDEO SYSTEMCurrently the campus video has inputs from Atlantic Broadband (optical fiber cable to the campus video head-end onthe Queen Anne’s Technical building). There are also three satellite dishes which provide input into the campus videosystem. They are reported to work but are rarely used. Continuing Educations, Food Service and Public Broadcastinguse the satellite dishes. The campus video output broadcasts on Queen Anne’s County public access channel 6.The campus video head-end needs to be relocated to the TV Studio in the LRC. The existing coaxial cable fromQueen Anne to the LRC fails during inclement weather. Also it is planned that all future building will be connected tothe LRC via optical fiber cables.The future trend for campus video will be to migrate to streaming video / video on demand, provided over the campusdata network. There is a need to transition away from the failing coaxial system and use the optical fiber cabling asthe preferred campus video distribution technology. Future projects should provide provisions and infrastructure forconvergence of voice, data, and video systems.The Distance Learning Rooms in the Higher Education Center and the Queen Anne’s Technical Building need to becombined.DATA SYSTEM - WIDE AREA NETWORKCurrently, the campus wide area network (WAN) system consists of two T1 lines (one data and one voice) betweenthe Chesapeake campus and Easton campus, and two T1 lines (one data and one voice) plus a 50Mb optical fibercable between the Chesapeake campus and Cambridge campus. A multi-T1 line (5 Mbps) connects the Chesapeakecampus to the internet.The T1 lines go to the campus head-end in room D119 of Dorchester Hall.From Dorchester Hall a optical fiber cable (4 to 6 Mbps link) connect to the Learning Resource Center (LRC).The LRC connect wirelessly to the campus tower via an unlicensed radio signal. The radio signal connects to theSailor equipment in the Radio Hut at the base of the tower for transmission via antenna to the internet.Sufficient bandwidth is a growing concern, due to the growth on on-line courses, streaming video, and otherdemands on the campus network. Future projects should provide provisions and infrastructure for convergence ofvoice, data, and video systems.The existing campus optical fiber system works well for now, but will be at maximum capacity in the near future.There is a need to provide supplemental campus optical fiber backbone to provide 10Gig (10000 Mbps) capacity5‐9
