<strong>Chesapeake</strong> <strong>College</strong> January <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Facilities</strong> <strong>Master</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> UpdateIndependent StudySpecial StudyIn addition to the program formats offered by <strong>Chesapeake</strong> <strong>College</strong>, various statewide programs are available toMid/Upper-Eastern Shore residents at other Maryland community colleges. Area students enrolled in theseprograms are eligible for in-county tuition rates at the host institution. Eligible high school juniors and seniors mayearn college credits while still in high school under <strong>Chesapeake</strong>’s Dual Enrollment program. <strong>College</strong> credits earnedby Dual Enrollment students can often be applied toward high school graduation requirements and, in all cases, willbe a part of the student’s permanent college record.CONTINUING EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE TRAININGThe Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Training provides programs and non-credit course offeringsdesigned to afford lifelong learning opportunities for adult individuals, to meet licensure/certification requirements ofvarious professions, and to meet the specific training needs of employers throughout the region. A wide range ofcourses to upgrade skills, develop new skills, or just for special interest are offered throughout the year at locations inCaroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties. Courses are offered in areas such as: child care,computer training, nursing and other allied health professions, industrial technology, insurance, law enforcement,family, food/restaurant, GED prep, personal interest, real estate, travel, and truck driving, welding, and more. Somecourse offerings are designed specifically for special populations, such as senior citizens, or talented and giftedyouth.The Division regularly provides customized training for employers in the <strong>College</strong>’s five-county service area.Customized training is provided for clients in both the public and private sectors including for-profit business andindustry, government, non-profit organizations, service agencies and professional associations. The Division hasalso been very successful in providing training opportunities for displaced workers as part of federal, state, and localgrants supporting workforce development objectives. The Division provides adult basic education (ABE), GED prepand English as Second Language (ESL) courses. The Division works in partnership with the local WorkforceInvestment Board which is located on the Wye Mills campus and the Upper Shore Manufacturing and BusinessCouncil.In Fiscal Year 2011, Continuing Education produced approximately 33% of the total full-time equivalent (FTE)enrollment for <strong>Chesapeake</strong> <strong>College</strong>. The following table illustrates this relationship over the past five years.3-5
