Chesapeake College January 2012 Facilities Master Plan UpdateEast-West Pedestrian Lane:The East-West Pedestrian Lane provides a clear corridor through the campus core to the athletic fields. Thewestern origin of this lane is at the proposed LRC drop-off loop, linking Lot D and the Higher Education Buildingto the LRC Quad. The lane crosses the LRC Quad and follows the existing walkway alignment on the north sideof Kent and Talbot before traversing Talbot Quad south of the proposed Physical Education / CAHA Building.Care should be given to maintain the significant trees located on the south side of the Physical Education /CAHA Building that currently line this walkway. Windows along the façade of the new CAHA Expansion havethe potential to animate this pedestrian connection and Talbot Quad. The design of Parking Lot A.1 expansionand the new loop road accommodate pedestrian movement. Pedestrian crosswalks should be clearly visible topromote safe and convenient access to the Chinese Pavilion, pond and athletic fields.North-South Pedestrian Lane:The North-South Pedestrian Lane will follow the existing alignment of the walkway to the east of EconomicDevelopment and along the east side of Dorchester. The site design of Queen Anne’s Technical CenterReplacement (2a) or a new academic building lane offers an opportunity create a plaza off of this lane anddeflect the lane to shape and define a new open space between the east face of the Economic DevelopmentBuilding and the north face of Queen Anne’s Technical. This walkway terminates on the southern end at theLoop Road and at the face of the proposed Maintenance Building.QUEEN ANNE TECH REPLACMENT (2A) –ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CENTER LAWNThe land area framed by the east face of the Economic Development Building and the north face of Queen Anne’sTech Replacement is the northern terminus of proposed North-South Pedestrian Lane. This space represents alandscape opportunity to create a welcoming approach to the core campus from parking lot B and the TPAC/EDCdrop-off in addition to providing an amenity space for adjacent buildings. Where possible the site design shouldincorporate existing trees.POND TRAIL AND PLANTINGPedestrian access to the pond and athletic fields is desired and needed to better integrate these amenities with thecampus core. The Master Site Plan illustrates a trail that extends from the East-West Pedestrian Lane and createsa loop around the pond. The design of the pond loop trail and landscape is an opportunity to integrate the ChinesePavilion with the pond. Ultimately the trail will connect to the new concession building. Landscape vistas should beencouraged to strengthen the visual connection between the Talbot Quad, the Chinese Pavilion, the pond and newconcession building. This would be the minimum trail recommended. Over time, the trail system could be extendedfurther south along the athletic fields and tie into any future bike path or lane provided along Rt. 213.MAIN VEHICULAR DROP-OFFThe existing main drop-off loop is spacious, but is an underutilization of land. The Master Site Plan identifies astrategy to reconfigure the geometry of the drop-off loop to increase useable land for future buildings and relatedsite improvements, and provide an opportunity to increase convenient visitor and accessible parking spaces withinproximity to Dorchester. The design needs to accommodate transit service. Since this site improvement is at theterminus of the main entrance from Rt. 213, the landscape design has an important role to enhance a visitor’s first6-30
