Chesapeake College January 2012 Facilities Master Plan UpdateThe Economic Development Center has expansion opportunities to the east or west. Expansion to the west shouldtake into account the service and loading access to the LRC and Caroline College Center. Expansion to theeast should take advantage of the opportunity to reinforce the central drop off area as the campus “front door”.The Maintenance Building could expand to the southeast or west. Telecommunication infrastructure is constraintfor eastward expansion. Expansion to the west and south will displace surface parking and services.NEW BUILDINGS WITHIN COREIn addition to building expansion opportunities, there are numerous development sites that could accommodate newbuildings. These include:The Manufacturing Training Center as described in other chapters should ultimately be demolished. Areplacement building could be constructed in its place or further to the west to create an architectural presenceon the secondary entrance road and to create a more useable parking service lot adjacent to the MaintenanceBuilding. Any new building development in this area should reinforce the north-south pedestrian connection tothe core of campus. The Technical Annex cannot be demolished until surge space is constructed that couldaccommodate its programming. The land north and west of Kent Humanities is an opportunity to site a new building on the LRC Quad, reinforcingthe definition of this space. Site planning and design of this building should take into account the existingevergreen grove and future opportunities to expand parking resources in this area. The land east of the Economic Development Center provides generous space for a new building site, if the EDCdoes not expand east. This building site offers an opportunity to reinforce the central drop off area and enhancethe sense of arrival to the campus. The Queen Anne’s Technical building site offers a good opportunity for redevelopment, assuming this building’sprogram is relocated to a new facility elsewhere on campus.NEW BUILDINGS OUTSIDE COREThere are a number of opportunities for future development outside of the core area. Because there is a significantamount of land available, there is a danger of building where it is easiest and most convenient. Consideration shouldbe given, however, to using development outside the loop road to continue to reinforce significant campus spaces.LRC Quad Extension: The obvious and most important development sites are to the west of the LRC Quad, tocontinue to reinforce this space. The placement of buildings here will play an important role in shaping thewestern terminus of the LRC Quad and enhancing the arrival from Rt. 662. Building expansion here needs toconsider realignment of the loop road to minimize pedestrian/vehicular conflicts.6-22
