Chesapeake College January 2012 Facilities Master Plan UpdateThe other area of campus that acts as a quadrangle is “Talbot Quad” the area defined by Talbot, Dorchester, QueenAnne’s Technical, Daycare and the Physical Education building. In comparison to the “LRC Quad”, this space hasless of a geometric organization, with less open lawn and more tree canopy cover. This quad is mostly a passiveopen space.SACRED SPACES“Sacred spaces” are those areas of the campus that serve an important function in the daily social interaction on acampus, represent historical aspects of the campus and/or are important components of a campus image. Theseshould be preserved and enhanced. These are areas that should be preserved and enhanced as part of the masterplan. Three areas were identified by stakeholders as “sacred” and include “Talbot Quad” as described above, thepond and its surroundings, and the existing woodland. The pond and the woods, in particular, are currentlyunderutilized so there is opportunity as the campus develops to enhance these resources and make them moreaccessible to students, faculty and the community.While the above spaces were identified by stakeholders as sacred spaces, other areas that the planning team thinksshould also be considered sacred are the “LRC Quad” and the main entrance drive/drop-off corridor. The latter notso much because it is a space not suitable for activity, rather it is an important part of the campus image and identity.GATHERING AREASGathering areas are those areas where students and faculty congregate because they are pleasant spaces, they areassociated with a particular interior use or they are located at particular junctions. As with sacred spaces, the masterplan should strive to preserve and reinforce these spaces. The most significant gathering spaces include the eastside of the “LRC Quad” (the Core Garden near Dorchester and Caroline), the Caroline Patio on the north side ofCaroline, the entrance area in front of Talbot and the terrace outside of the LRC. Because the terrace on the northside of Caroline has become so popular, there is a need to create a stronger connection between it and theEconomic Development Center. This most likely will be an architectural solution.IMAGE OPEN SPACESome open space areas are not used for activities, but are nonetheless important in terms of overall campus image.In particular, the open space associated with the main entrance drive and the drop-off circle is particularly important.As identified in the previous master plan, this entrance drive is reminiscent of the traditional approach drive to manyEastern Shore estates and conveys a distinct sense of arrival and welcome. The frontage along Rt. 50 also conveysan important Eastern Shore rural image for the College.6-20
Chesapeake College January 2012 Facilities Master Plan UpdatePRIMARY DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIESThe Chesapeake College Campus contains a significant amount of acreage providing for expansion for its facilities.Following is an outline of the primary opportunities for development of new (or expansion of existing) facilities:EXHIBIT 6-3:BUILDING EXPANSIONMany of the existing buildings have open space adjacent to them which would allow for expansion opportunities.The Daycare facility could expand to the east or west. There is an existing playground and grove of trees to thenorth and expansion to the north would cut off window access to some of the existing classrooms.The Physical Education facility could expand to the south or the east. Expansion to the south should takeadvantage of the opportunity to provide an attractive architectural face along the north side of Talbot Quad.Expansion to the northeast provides an opportunity to enhance the arrival experience to the College and shapethe future development around the existing drop-off loop.6-21
