Given the coinciding factors described in the previous two paragraphs, it is crucial for policymakersin the B4 countries, and in the Accession Countries in general, to act now to ensure that temporaryobstacles arising from this unique situation do not prevent their SME sectors from seizing thesignificant opportunities (e.g. of capturing niche markets globally) which are potentially within theirreach.Given their impressive progress made in the past 15 years, given their documented dynamism andability to adjust to rapidly changing conditions, and provided they have the resolve and vision toact now to put into place critical conditions for enabling innovation and enterprise development ingeneral and for SMEs in particular, the B4 countries have the opportunity to reap substantial andlasting economic and social benefits from both their accession to the European Union and the ascentof the knowledge-based economy.98
