<strong>Municipal</strong> <strong>Study</strong> <strong>2011</strong>Business Retention & Expansion ProgramsEast GwillimburyThe Town developed a Business Retention and Expansion Program (BR&E) in partnership with theMinistry <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, South Lake Community Futures Development Corporationand the East Gwillimbury Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce. The BR&E program voices the needs <strong>of</strong> localbusinesses and identifies specific initiatives and areas <strong>of</strong> focus that the Town should pursue to best supportlocal businesses.The Town’s Business Development Advisory Committee (BDC) meets on a monthly basis to provide theTown with input and advice on current and future business related projects (i.e. East Gwillimbury’s Farmers’Market).The York Small Business Enterprise Centre (YSBEC) provides business support to small businesses.YSBEC’s support includes free consultation, single point <strong>of</strong> contact for business questions, wide range <strong>of</strong>business information, <strong>of</strong>fers affordable seminars and workshops that provide useful information and tools foroperating a business, networking opportunities, referrals to business programs, financial providers,pr<strong>of</strong>essional services and associations, and youth initiatives such as Summer Company and Business planCompetition. The Town assists YSBEC by hosting some <strong>of</strong> their workshops and seminars.Business Development related Partnerships: The Town partners with the Region <strong>of</strong> York, the NorthernSix <strong>Municipal</strong>ities <strong>of</strong> York Region, the East Gwillimbury Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce and York Small BusinessEnterprise Centre on many different business and economic development related initiatives.The Physician Recruitment and Retention Program meets on a monthly basis and works to attract andretain new physicians, medical clinics and facilities to the Town. The Committee advises Council onstrategy, policy and procedures to help achieve Council’s goals related to the health and well-being <strong>of</strong>residents.Fort ErieCompany Visitation Program.GeorginaThe Council <strong>of</strong> the Town <strong>of</strong> Georgina recently endorsed an Economic Strategy and Mission Statement andin 2008 established an Economic Development Division. The Division has been working to assist withthe promotion <strong>of</strong> local businesses and has partnered with a number <strong>of</strong> local organizations to leverageadditional funds from South Lake Community Futures for a number <strong>of</strong> initiatives.The Town is also in the final stages <strong>of</strong> completing a Business Retention and Expansion project which willhelp staff better understand some <strong>of</strong> the barriers <strong>of</strong> conducting business in Georgina and the potentialopportunities for growth.Economic Development Programs345
