<strong>Municipal</strong> <strong>Study</strong> <strong>2011</strong>Business Retention & Expansion ProgramsPeterboroughOperated through the Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPAEDC). TheGPAEDC is governed as a public/private non-pr<strong>of</strong>it partnership corporation. The following programs areused:Proactive business retention and expansion program, including business visitation programs, governmentfunding programs, and acting as a government liaisonMaintain economic data, statistics and informationDevelop partnerships to promote, support and sustain growthMediate conflicts and advocate for business concernsMarket Peterborough to prospective businessesThe Business Advisory Centre has consultants to advise both prospective and established businessowners on key aspects <strong>of</strong> start-up and the maintaining <strong>of</strong> successful businesses. The Centre providesinformation on government programs, library, trade show directory, internet access, personalized businessconsultations and seminars. Peterborough also has a Business Advisory Centre (Phase 2), which focuses on businesses that are 3-5years old. Issues such as capital expansions, accounts receivable and other financial matters are typicallyaddressed.The <strong>City</strong> has a Physician Recruitment Program, which is funded by the Federal Government. There is full-time staff dedicated to the program. A program in the community has been established to <strong>of</strong>fer incentivesto attract new physicians to the community.Skilled Labour Recruitment Program, which is funded by the province to attract new manufacturingcompanies to the community and help retain a skilled labour force in existing companies.The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Peterborough also has a comprehensive Affordable Housing Program which providesincentives to developers including the waiving <strong>of</strong> DC’s, Planning Fees and Building Permit Fees.Economic Development Programs356
