1110 BOARD OF SUPERVISORSDEPARTMENT DESCRIPTIONThe Board of Supervisors is a seven-member body elected to represent citizens of each ofthe <strong>County</strong>’s seven election districts. Supervisors are each elected to a four-year term.The supervisors’ election terms are staggered. The Board elects its chairman and vicechairmaneach year at the Board’s organizational meeting in January. In accordance withState Code, the Board has both administrative and legislative responsibilities including,but not limited to, preparing the <strong>County</strong> budget, levying <strong>County</strong> taxes, appropriatingfunds, approving and enforcing ordinances, and establishing policies and procedures toefficiently and effectively improve the overall quality of life in <strong>Bedford</strong> <strong>County</strong>. TheBoard appoints the <strong>County</strong> Administrator and the <strong>County</strong> Attorney. The Board alsoappoints representatives to the Social Services Board, the <strong>Bedford</strong> Regional LibraryBoard, the Planning Commission, the Economic Development Authority, the PublicService Authority, and other local boards and commissions.
