Chapter 2 – Installing Community Edition<br />

Community Edition can run on Linux, UNIX or Windows and is very easy to install. It has no<br />

licensing limitations in terms of the hardware resources you can use. If you are working on<br />

the cloud and don't want to bother installing products, there are Community Edition and<br />

DB2 Express-C images available for development, test, and production use on the Amazon<br />

EC2 cloud.<br />

• How to install Community Edition on Windows<br />

• How to install Community Edition on Linux<br />

• Community Edition and DB2 Express-C on the cloud<br />

2.1 Installing Community Edition: The big picture<br />

Installing Community Edition consists of 3 basic steps:<br />

1. Download Community Edition,<br />

2. Obtain and install a Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and<br />

3. Install Community Edition.<br />

We focus our discussion on step 1 and 3 in this book. For step 2, refer to the <strong>Getting</strong><br />

started <strong>with</strong> Java free ebook. Figure 2.1 illustrates the steps to follow to get started <strong>with</strong><br />

Community Edition.
