<strong>Air</strong> Fares and Ticketing – Fares and Rules reference guide – Levels 1 and 2<br />
– Coupon, Passenger<br />
The portion of the Passenger Ticket and<br />
Baggage Check that Constitutes the<br />
passenger’s written evidence of the contract of<br />
carriage,<br />
– Currency of the country of payment<br />
The currency in which international fares from<br />
that country are denominated.<br />
– Date of transaction<br />
The date of issuance of the ticket, MCO or PTA.<br />
– Days<br />
Full calendar days, including Sundays and<br />
legal holidays; provided that, for the purpose of<br />
notification, the balance of the day upon which<br />
notice is dispatched shall not be counted; and<br />
that for purposes of determining duration of<br />
validity the balance of the day upon which the<br />
ticket is issued or flight has commenced shall<br />
not be counted.<br />
– Deadline<br />
Reservations: the minimum number of days<br />
months before the day of departure by which<br />
reservations must be made.<br />
-’Ticketing’: the minimum number of days<br />
months before the day of departure by which<br />
payment and ticketing must be completed; the<br />
issue date of a PTA constitutes the ticketing<br />
date.<br />
Notes:<br />
1 When “deadline” is used in paragraphs other<br />
than Reservations and Ticketing, the term<br />
refers to the deadline for reservations and<br />
ticketing. When different deadlines apply, the<br />
relevant deadline will be indicated e.g. “before<br />
ticketing deadline.”<br />
2 ‘Before deadline’ includes transactions made<br />
also on the deadline date.<br />
3 (Only applicable when specifically referred to<br />
in a Fare Rule) Where this date falls on a<br />
weekend/public holiday, the last preceding<br />
business day becomes the deadline.<br />
– Declared Value for Carriage<br />
The value of goods or baggage declared to the<br />
carrier by the passenger for the purposes of<br />
determining charges or of establishing the limit<br />
of the carriers liability for loss, damage or<br />
delay.<br />
– Departure<br />
The day/time of the flight on which the<br />
passenger is booked/ticketed to travel.<br />
Notes<br />
1. before departure: the definition refers to the<br />
first flight of the pricing unit.<br />
2. after departure: the definition refers to<br />
subsequent flights of the pricing unit.<br />
– Destination<br />
The ultimate stopping place of the journey as<br />
shown on the passenger ticket.<br />
EXCEPTION via AC/CO/CP/TW: The ultimate<br />
destination (via CO) point of the passenger’s<br />
journey as shown on the ticket.<br />
– Direct route<br />
The shortest all year route operated by a<br />
carrier in both directions between ticketed<br />
points at which it exercises traffic rights. . . .<br />
Note: Routings carrying global indicators (such<br />
as AT and EH) are considered direct.<br />
– Direct route fare<br />
The fare over the direct route between two<br />
points. When no direct route fare exists<br />
between two ticketed points a fare must be<br />
established by combination over a ticketed<br />
point on the itinerary.<br />
EXCEPTION: via NW: The fare applicable to<br />
the direct route between two points, i.e. without<br />
regard to actual routing or stopover.<br />
– Direct routing<br />
The shortest route operated by any carrier in<br />
both directions between two ticketed points.<br />
– Domestic<br />
via BA Travel within a sovereign state (IATA<br />
country code).<br />
– Domestic Carriage<br />
Travel in which, according to the contract of<br />
carriage, the points of departure, stopover and<br />
destination are within one sovereign state.<br />
– Domestic tare<br />
A fare applicable between points in the same<br />
country.<br />
– Domestic transfer<br />
A change from the domestic service of one<br />
carrier to another domestic service of the same<br />
carrier (online transfer) or to the domestic<br />
service of another carrier (interline transfer).<br />

– Economy Class Fare<br />
The full fare established for normal/regular or<br />
usual service, the application of which is not<br />

– Educational Establishment<br />
A school/academy/college/university offering<br />
full-time educational/vocational/technical<br />
courses for a school year. Does not<br />
include a commercial office, industrial/military<br />
establishment or hospital at which a student is<br />
serving an apprenticeship unless such<br />
apprenticeship is part of the school curriculum<br />
at the educational establishment at which the<br />
student is enrolled.<br />
– End-on combination<br />
Combination of two or more fares which could<br />
be ticketed separately at a fare construction<br />
point (not applicable to combination of fares<br />
between the same points).<br />
EXCEPTION: via AA/AS/DL/JL: Combination<br />
of two or more fares at a fare construction point<br />
(not applicable to combination of fares<br />
between the same points).<br />
– Endorsement<br />
The transfer of authority required when a<br />
passenger with an international ticket wishes to<br />
rebook to a carrier other than the carrier shown<br />
on the ticket.<br />
– End-to-End<br />

– Exchange Order<br />
A document issued by a carrier or its agents<br />
requesting issue of an appropriate Passenger<br />
Ticket and Baggage Check or provision of<br />
services to the person named in such<br />
document.<br />
– Extraterritorial Trip<br />
Between Canada and Puerto Rico/Virgin<br />
Islands: Any trip which includes transportation:<br />
1 via one or more carriers within the area<br />
consisting of Continental USA and Canada;<br />
and<br />
2 via commercial air (not including charter<br />
services or military air services to or from any<br />
point outside such area).<br />
– Fare<br />
The amount charged by the earner for the<br />
carriage of a passenger and his allowable free<br />
baggage and is the current fare which a carrier<br />
in the publication it normally uses to publish<br />
fares, holds out to the public, or the<br />
appropriate segment of the public, as being<br />
applicable to the class of service to be<br />
furnished.<br />
– Fare, Applicable<br />
For tickets issued on or after 1 June 2000:<br />
For fare construction purposes, a fare which is<br />
established after the application of all fare<br />
construction calculations, e.g. excess mileage<br />
fare, higher intermediate fare, etc.<br />
– Fare break points<br />

– Fare component<br />
A portion of an itinerary between two<br />
consecutive fare construction points. If the<br />
journey has only one fare component, the<br />
points of origin and destination are the only fare<br />
construction points.<br />
EXCEPTIONS:<br />
1 via AC/AS/CO/CP//MX/TR/TW: Each local<br />
currency fare (except add-ons) where more<br />
than one such fare is used in construction of<br />
the total fare for a journey.<br />
2 via BA: A portion of an itinerary between two<br />
consecutive fare break points.<br />
3 via NW: (Or Fare Sector) The portion of an<br />
itinerary between two fare construction points.<br />
4 via all other carriers: The fare charged<br />
between two points.<br />

The terminal points of a fare component. These<br />
are also termed fare break points.<br />

For tickets issued on or after 1 June 2000:<br />

– Fare, Joint<br />
A fare which applies over the lines of two or<br />

A fare published for use only in combination<br />

A fare for travel by one class of service which<br />
is established and used by a scheduled air<br />
cairrier(s) (including any individual joint fares)<br />
for a section of a through route.<br />
– Fare, Special<br />
A fare other than the normal fare.<br />
– Fare, Specified<br />
The fare specifically set out in a Tariff.<br />
– Fare, Through<br />
The total fare from point of departure to point of<br />
destination. FARE, TOUR BASING means a<br />
fare which may be used only for air<br />
transportation as part of an inclusive tour.<br />

The right of an air carrier to carry to another<br />

The right of an air carrier io carry, to the country<br />
in which it is registered, passenger, freight and<br />
mail originating in another country.<br />

– Fifth Freedom: The right to enplane traffic in<br />
one foreign country and to deplane traffic in<br />
another foreign country.<br />
– Sixth Freedom: via BA: The right to enplane<br />
traffic in one foreign country, transport the<br />
traffic via the country of registration, and<br />
deplane the traffic in another foreign country.<br />
– Seventh Freedom: via BA: The right to<br />
enplane traffic in one foreign country and<br />
transport the traffic without transiting the<br />
country of registration.<br />
2 via JL:<br />
– Third Freedom: The right for an air carrier to<br />
put down, in the territory of another state,<br />
passengers, freight and mail taken up in the<br />
State in which it is registered.<br />
– Fourth Freedom: The right for an air carrier to<br />
take on, in another State, passengers, freight<br />
