<strong>Air</strong> Fares and Ticketing – Fares and Rules reference guide – Levels 1 and 2<br />
1 Abbreviations and Definitions<br />
do not require ticket reissuance.<br />
EXCEPTION: via DL/NW: A change made in<br />
the reservation (via DL) to a different date.<br />
– Reconfirmation<br />
A requirement that passengers, under certain<br />
given circumstances, advise a carrier of their<br />
intention to use the space reserved.<br />
– Refund<br />
The repayment to the purchaser of all or a<br />
portion of a fare rate or charge for unused<br />
carriage or service.<br />
– Reissue<br />
An alteration to a ticket that cannot be done<br />
through revalidation and requires issuance of a<br />
new ticket.<br />
EXCEPTION: via AA/AS: Any change to a<br />
validated ticket requiring a replacement ticket<br />
be issued, including but not limited to the<br />
following: upgrade/ downgrade/ additional<br />
coupons/ increase in fare.<br />
– Related charges<br />
Charges such as cancellation penalties,<br />
nonrefundable amounts, rebooking and<br />
rerouting charges, stopover charges, weekend<br />
surcharges etc., and excess baggage<br />
charges.<br />
EXCEPTION: via DL Those charges to be<br />
shown in the fare construction box of the ticket,<br />
cancellation penalties, nonrefundable<br />
amounts, rebooking and rerouting charges and<br />
excess baggage charges.<br />
– Reroute<br />
To issue a new ticket covering transportation to<br />
the same destination, but via a different routing<br />
than that designated on the ticket, or to honour<br />
the ticket held by the passenger . for<br />
transportation to the same destination but via a<br />
different routing.<br />
EXCEPTIONS:<br />
1 via AA/AR/CO/DL/JL/KE/LR/RG: A change<br />
of routing, fare, carriers, class of service, flight<br />
or date from that originally provided for on the<br />
ticket. (Except via KE) Not applicable to open<br />
tickets.<br />
2 via NW: A change of routing, fare basis or<br />
amount, or carrier from that originally provided<br />
for on the ticket. Changes to flights and/or<br />
dates only do not constitute reroute.<br />
– Rerouting<br />
Change of routing or other changes which<br />
require ticket reissuance.<br />
– Reservations<br />
Equivalent to the term ‘booking’. The allotment<br />
in advance of seating or sleeping<br />
accommodation for a passenger or of space or<br />
weight capacity for baggage or goods.<br />
– Reservations Booking Designator<br />
The code used in reservation messages to<br />
denote the compartment in which reservations<br />
are made.<br />
– Resident<br />
A person legally living in a country of which he/<br />
she is/is not a citizen (via AS/CO/MX/US)<br />
provided that a more restricted definition may<br />
form part of a local agreement.<br />
– Return Journey<br />
See Round Trip.<br />
– Return Subjourney<br />
For tickets issued on or after 1 June 2000:<br />
Part of a journey wherein travel is from a point/<br />
country and return thereto and for which the<br />
fare is assessed as a single pricing unit using<br />
half round trip fares – round trip, circle trip,<br />
normal fare open jaw; also applicable to<br />
special fare open jaw returning to the same or<br />
another country.<br />
– Revalidation<br />
The authorised stamping or writing upon the<br />
Passenger Ticket evidencing that it has been<br />
officially altered by the carrier (via NW) to<br />
change flights and/or dates only. There can be<br />
no change to origin, destination, stopover<br />
points or fare (via NW) transfer points or<br />
amount.<br />
EXCEPTION: via AA/AS: Any change in<br />
reservations of flights which can be made with<br />
a revalidation sticker.<br />
– Round trip<br />
See definition in Rule 2.5.<br />
EXCEPTIONS:<br />
1 via 6Y/KE/MH/VW/VX: Equivalent to return<br />
journey:<br />
– Travel from one point to another and return<br />
by the same air route used outbound whether<br />
or not the fares outbound and inbound, be the<br />
same, or<br />
– Travel from one point to another and return by<br />
an air route different from that used outbound,<br />
for which the same normal, through, one way<br />
fare is established.<br />
2 via AA/AS/DL: A journey from a point or<br />
origin to another point and return to the point of<br />
origin, comprising two fare components only,<br />
for which the applicable normal fare for each<br />
component is the same as the routing travelled.<br />
Notes-.<br />
– via AA: This does not apply to round-the<br />
world journeys.<br />
– via DL: If the fares to be used differ through<br />
class of service/ seasonality/ midweek/<br />
weekend/ carrier variations, the outbound fare<br />
shall be used also for the inbound fare<br />
component for the purpose of determining if<br />
the journey is a round trip.<br />
– via NW: A journey comprised of not more<br />
than two fare sectors from one point and return<br />
to the same point. When determining if a RT<br />
journey exists, the applicable normal fare<br />
(including mileage surcharges and higher<br />
intermediate fares) both outbound and<br />
inbound must be equal, regardless of actual<br />
construction.<br />
– via TW: Journey entirely by air from one point<br />
of origin to another point and return to the point<br />
of origin, comprising two fare components only,<br />
for which the applicable normal half round trip<br />
fare for each component, measured from the<br />
point of origin, is the same for the routing<br />
travelled; provided that this definition will not<br />
apply to journeys for which the same all year<br />
though one way fare is established, between<br />
two points, in either direction around the World.<br />
If the fares to be used differ through class of<br />
service/seasonality/midweek- weekend/carrier<br />
variations, the outbound fare shall be used also<br />
for the inbound fare component for the purpose<br />
of determining if the journey is a round. trip.<br />
– via all other carriers: Travel from one point to<br />
another and return by any air route for which<br />
the same normal all year through one-way fare<br />
of the same class applies from the point of<br />
origin.<br />
Notes: – This definition does not apply to<br />
journeys for which the same all year through<br />
one-way tare is established between two<br />
points, in either direction around the world.<br />
– via JL: If the fares to be used differ through<br />
class of service/ seasonality/ midweek/<br />
weekend/ carrier variations, the outbound fare<br />
shall be used also for the inbound fare<br />
component for the purpose of determining if<br />
the journey is a round trip.<br />
– Round-the-world<br />
Travel from the point of origin and return thereto<br />
which involves only one crossing of the Atlantic<br />
Ocean. and only one crossing of the Pacific<br />
Ocean See Rule 2.8.<br />
– Route, Direct<br />
See Direct Route.<br />
– Route, Indirect<br />
See Indirect Route.<br />
– Route, Through<br />
the total route from point of departure to point<br />
of destination.<br />
– Routing<br />
The carrier and/or the cities and/or class of<br />
service and/or type of aircraft (jet or propeller)<br />
via which transportation is provided between<br />
two points.<br />
EXCEPTION: via NW: The carrier(s) and cities<br />
by and between which transportation is<br />
provided.<br />
– School Year<br />
via AS: Means a period of 12 consecutive<br />
months less whatever interruptions for<br />
vacations are normally granted by the<br />
education establishment at which the student<br />
is enrolled; provided that where the official<br />
scholastic year is less than 12 months,<br />
‘SCHOOL YEAW shall mean not less than a 6<br />
month period less whatever interruptions for<br />
vacations are normally granted at the<br />
educational establishment at which the student<br />
is enrolled.<br />
– Sector<br />
A portion of the journey comprised of legs or<br />
segments, usually used in reference to fare<br />
construction.<br />
EXCEPTION: via AS/BA/CO/DL/US: Portion of<br />
the journey covered by a single flight coupon.<br />
– Segment<br />
A portion of the journey between boarding and<br />
disembarkation points that may be comprised<br />
of a leg or group of legs.<br />
EXCEPTION: When a passenger transfers from<br />
one flight to another flight bearing the same<br />
number (change of gauge), the two flights<br />
combined shall be considered as one<br />
segment. (via NW) When there’s a change in<br />
flight number but no change of planes, the two<br />
flight numbers shall be considered one<br />
segment.<br />
– Self-reliant Passenger<br />
1 via AA/BW/JM/TW: A passenger who is<br />
independent, self-sufficient, capable of caring<br />
for all physical needs during flight or during an<br />
emergency evacuation or decompression; and<br />
who requires no special or unusual on-board<br />
attention beyond that afforded to the general<br />
public, other than assistance in boarding<br />
and/or deplaning the aircraft.<br />
2 via AS: A person who is independent, self<br />
sufficient and capable of caring for all Physical<br />
needs during flight, and who requires no<br />
special or unusual on board attention beyond<br />
that afforded to the general public, except that<br />
assistance in boarding and enplaning may be<br />
required.<br />
– Shortest Operated Mileage (Soms)<br />
The shortest distance, using non-stop sector<br />
mileages between any pair of points published<br />
in the IATA Mileage Manual.<br />
– Side trip<br />
A journey from and/or to an en-route point of a<br />
fare component.<br />
EXCEPTIONS:<br />
1 via AA/AS/NW: A round trip, circle trip, one<br />
way or open jaw journey to and or from an<br />
enroute point of a fare component. (Except as<br />
NW) When a fare for a side trip is charged<br />
separately, apply the provisions of fares for<br />
round trips, circle trips, one way and open jaw<br />
trips.<br />
2 via DU/JL: A journey (via DL, travel) not<br />
necessarily performed entirely by air from and/<br />
or to an en route point of a fare component.<br />
3 via RG/TR: Travel from and to the same<br />
intermediate point between fare construction<br />
points for which a separate fare is assessed.<br />
– Side trip combination<br />
The combination of a fare which could be<br />
ticketed separately from and/or to an en-route<br />
point of a fare component.<br />
– Single Open Jaw (SOJ)<br />
See-Rule 2.9<br />
– Special Drawing Right (Sdr)<br />
A rate of currency exchange set by the<br />
International Monetary Fund.<br />
– Special fare<br />
Any fare other than a normal fare.<br />
– Specified Fare<br />
via BA: A fare that is not constructed by use of<br />
an add-on.<br />
– Standard Class<br />
via AA/CO/DL/TW/US: Service on flights listed<br />
in carrier’s Official General Schedule as<br />
standard flights.<br />
– Standby Passengers<br />
Passengers who will board a flight subject to<br />
space availability at departure time and only<br />
after all passengers having reservations for<br />
such flight and all passengers without<br />
reservations but paying fares other than adult<br />
standby fares have boarded the flight.<br />
– Stopover<br />
When a passenger arrives at an intermediate<br />
point and is not scheduled to depart within 24<br />
hours of arrival. Please also see Rule 2.1.9.<br />
EXCEPTION: For travel wholly within Central<br />
America or for travel wholly between Central<br />
America and Panama: when a passenger<br />
arrives at an intermediate point and is not<br />
scheduled to depart within 6 hours of arrival.<br />
– Sunday Rule<br />
Return travel from the last fare construction<br />
point outside the country of unit origin must not<br />
be commenced before 0001 hours on the<br />
Sunday after the date of arrival at the first fare<br />
construction point outside the country of unit<br />
origin.<br />
– Surface Sector<br />
A sector between two intermediate points of a<br />
fare component where travel is via other than<br />
air transportation. In the case of a mileage fare<br />
the ticketed point mileage between the origin<br />
