24 - TINK 1.2.2 design tools Pieter Jan Stappers’s work comes useful in my attempt to categorize different kinds of objects. The sketch in figure 9 consists of a number of layers of design, each named after the main actor in it. Stappers refer to these as ‘meta-levels’, which help us understand how tools, the people that use them, and the process of design are inter-related: When we apply meta levels to design, we have users of tools we call products, designers of those products who use ‘design tools’, and people who create those tools, sometimes referred to as ‘design researchers’ or ‘methods developers’ 9 Within this schema, the Lampada Arco can be placed as a tool designed by product designers for consumer; the light bulb instead stays on a superior level and have the role of design tool that the product designer need to use when has to design a new lamp. Openness comes with a limitation: In order to operate those kinds of “open tools” some skills are required. For example, in order to replace the light bulb, we need know how to replace the bulb within lamp. Similarly, the knife of the Swiss Army Knife is a multipurpose tool not specifically designed to cut bread, but as it is an open tool, it can if we manipulate it in order to accomplish the task. In the same way product designer starts designing a product by defining requirements based on user research, designers of tools should start from a good understanding of their users: product designers. Design tools in fact should be designed based on the expertise designers have 6 and be able to integrate smoothly into their design process. Design Tools should empower designers, requiring from them a minimum effort in acquiring new skills that are not part of their main expertise. 6 Generally speaking we can state that a bigger level of openness in a product makes it serviceable at a higher level of meta-design. Design tools have therefore a bigger level of openness since they have to allow product designers to use them in as many projects as possible.
