to more older people living in rental accomodation. This could pose a problem<br />

because rented accommodation appears to be less likely to be adapted, unless<br />

it is social rental housing 96 .<br />

Beyond improving supply, there is <strong>an</strong> opportunity to make it easier <strong>an</strong>d more<br />

attractive for older people to move home. One study found that 58% <strong>of</strong> people<br />

over 60 were interested in moving 98 <strong>an</strong>d evidence suggests that some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

most common reasons for w<strong>an</strong>ting to move, such as those relating to health<br />

or family, grow in import<strong>an</strong>ce as people get older (see Figure 4.3). Evidence<br />

also suggests there may be a fin<strong>an</strong>cial barrier to downsizing as it is rarely costeffective<br />

unless the home being sold is particularly large or expensive 99 . There<br />

are also emotional challenges, with some people moving from a home where<br />

they have lived for m<strong>an</strong>y years reporting a loss <strong>of</strong> autonomy <strong>an</strong>d control 82 .<br />
