In 2016, Penang and Kota Kinabalu International Airports registered
growth of 6.8% and 10.5% respectively. This growth has been facilitated
by various capacity enhancements, efficiency measures and consolidation
of operations that it undertook in the past years.
Inspiration
Malaysia Airports is also among the country's top performing governmentlinked
companies (GLC) with revenue tripling for past 10 years.
As for future outlook, Malaysia Airports' five-year business plan, Runway
to Success (RtS2020) is well underway in ensuring the airport operator
becomes a global leader in creating airport cities.
Under the RtS2020 plan is the KLIA Aeropolis. This project is an
opportunity for Malaysia Airports to expand as a complete, synergistic
aviation ecosystem that provides best in-class connectivity, speed
and agility. Badlisham also said the project enhances their role as
an economic enabler by contributing significantly to the national
GDP and job creation. KLIA Aeropolis is expected to have an
estimated GDP contribution of about RM30 billion with 56,000
jobs created over a 15-year period.
Malaysia Airports also recently signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with Cainiao Network to explore the potential
on developing a regional e-commerce and logistics hub in KLIA
Aeropolis. The signing was conducted in conjunction with the
launch of the world’s first digital free trade zone (DFTZ) outside of
China.
KLIA Aeropolis was chosen as the site of the initial phase of DTFZ
due to KLIA's extensive network connectivity; progressive
infrastructure with its three independent runway system and
capacity for a future fourth runway; its existing Free Commercial
Zone (FCZ); and a ready logistics ecosystem populated with four
top worldwide integrators and 20 global freight forwarders.
second largest airport operator group
in the world in terms of number of
passengers handled. In 2016, it
registered nearly 89 million passenger
traffic. Badlisham said the future goal
is to increase this number to 115 million
passengers a year with KLIA
contributing 69 million.
