Some of them are mothers, teachers, CEOs, artists, accountants, lawyers, doctors, engineers, architects, judges, Prime Ministers, Presidents, sisters, daughters and many other titles. But, deep down they're people. They are around us and with us. In this article, Convergence celebrates women around the world by bringing you the best countries for women in 2017. 96
Special Feature SWEDEN It not only happens to be the best country for women, it also happens to be the best country to raise your children and the best country for green living. Here are several reasons as to why it remains the top for being a women-focused nation: • Pregnant women receive free or subsidised prenatal care • Parents receive 480 days of paid leave that can be split between two partners • Government provides monthly child allowance till the age of 16 • Equality within the current Swedish Cabinet with 12 female ministers and 12 male ministers • Gender-neutral day care centres • Nearly two-thirds of University degree holders are women • A gender pay gap that is slowly closing US News and World Reports Data Reporter, Deidre Phillips was quoted by a Swedish news outlet saying, "Relative to the countries ranked, Sweden scored highest in a compilation of five factors that are relevant to the well-being of women: cares about human rights, gender equality, income equality, safe and progressive. Survey participants from around the world consider Sweden the No 1 country that most strongly exemplifies gender equality and cares about human rights and rank it in the top-ten for the three other factors included." Stockholm's colourful Metro stations The Swedish Cabinet has 12 female Ministers The country really takes its feminism seriously when this is what it has to say on its government website, "Sweden has the first feminist government in the world. This means that gender equality is central to the Government’s priorities ̶ in decision-making and resource allocation. A feminist government ensures that a gender equality perspective is brought into policy-making on a broad front, both nationally and internationally." "Women and men must have the same power to shape society and their own lives. This is a human right and a matter of democracy and justice. Gender equality is also part of the solution to society’s challenges and a matter of course in a modern welfare state – for justice and economic development. The Government’s most important tool for implementing feminist policy is gender mainstreaming, of which genderresponsive budgeting is an important component." If you're travelling to Sweden, here are recommended places to go or things to do: visit the Stockholm Metro Art Gallery, stay in an ice hotel or tree hotel in the Arctic forest or perhaps you fancy visiting the country's nuclear reactor which can be viewed 25 metres underground. 97
