technology skills necessary to produce the “windows” that would be the<br />

final product <strong>of</strong> the project. The connection between csumb students<br />

and community youth was supported by interactions with the<br />

technology <strong>of</strong> the lab, where side-by-side p<strong>art</strong>nerships were forged<br />

and ideas were exchanged.<br />

linda Before the Looking In/Looking Out project, our computer lab<br />

went unused for a year because the kids were afraid and unwilling to<br />

use computers. Later their whole attitude changed and it changed<br />

the atmosphere <strong>of</strong> learning. There was a buzz in the school lab as<br />

the kids gained more skills.<br />

johanna It was almost like a “third <strong>voice</strong>” that spoke for both p<strong>art</strong>ners.<br />

The lab became a studio where the work was fluid and collaborative<br />

as the technicians assisted.<br />

But technology was only the tool. Time and time again trust became<br />

the issue. csumb students in the lab worked closely with the youth<br />

p<strong>art</strong>icipants to keep the project going.<br />

portraits used a range <strong>of</strong> imagery to<br />

reflect students’ views <strong>of</strong> themselves<br />

and their community and culture.
