Đó là một ngày mùa hè nắng rực rỡ miền<br />
bờ Tây nước Mỹ. Tôi thức dậy với món<br />
beefsteak nóng hổi Khoa đã đặt sẵn trên<br />
bàn. Ngoài vườn, lũ sóc vẫn chừa lại cho<br />
tôi những chùm nho tí hon ngọt lịm sau<br />
cuộc càn quét đêm qua. Sau bữa sáng, mẹ<br />
Khoa gói cho hai đứa tôi một ít cherry và<br />
đồ ăn vặt để nhâm nhi trên đường. Hôm<br />
nay chúng tôi đi Napa, thung lũng rượu<br />
vang nổi tiếng của California, cách nhà<br />
Khoa gần hai giờ lái xe.<br />
Từ Santa Rosa, xe chạy về hướng đông<br />
nam, nơi có con sông Napa tưới tắm phù<br />
sa cho những cánh đồng hoa màu bạt<br />
ngàn, trù phú. Băng qua những khu dân<br />
cư và những con đường cao tốc, chúng tôi<br />
bước vào vùng non cao với những đồi núi<br />
nhấp nhô và các con dốc ngoằn ngoèo.<br />
Thung lũng Napa dần hiện ra trước mắt<br />
chúng tôi với hình ảnh đặc trưng là những<br />
cánh đồng nho trải dài tít tắp. Khoa cho<br />
xe đi chậm lại để tôi nhìn rõ hơn những<br />
chùm quả trên cành. Hai năm làm bán<br />
thời gian tại một nhà máy sản xuất rượu<br />
vang trong lúc đi học giúp Khoa có thể<br />
phân biệt rạch ròi từng loại nho ứng với<br />
từng loại rượu thành phẩm và thời điểm<br />
chín muồi để thu hoạch. Hè về, nho chín<br />
trĩu cả một vùng trời.<br />
Lác đác giữa những vườn nho là những<br />
ngôi biệt thự hay những lò sản xuất rượu<br />
vang nằm lùi xa so với mặt đường. Mỗi<br />
tòa nhà mang một nét kiến trúc khác<br />
nhau, phản ánh phần nào nguồn gốc của<br />
người sở hữu. Điểm đến Khoa đã chọn<br />
sẵn cho chúng tôi là một tòa lâu đài nguy<br />
nga mang tên Castello di Amorosa, hay<br />
Lâu đài Tình yêu trong tiếng Ý.<br />
Tôi thích công trình ngay từ ấn tượng đầu<br />
tiên, từ hai hàng cây bá trắc thẳng tắp dẫn<br />
đường đến những tòa tháp màu đỏ gạch<br />
vươn cao mang dáng dấp của một kiến<br />
trúc thời Trung cổ. Lâu đài nằm tựa lưng<br />
vào một cánh rừng, phía trước hướng về<br />
cánh đồng nho bạt ngàn xen lẫn những<br />
hàng ô liu và trại chăn thả gia súc. Tất<br />
cả những đặc trưng về địa hình, khí hậu,<br />
thảm thực vật, kiến trúc, ẩm thực… của<br />
vùng Tuscany miền Trung nước Ý từ bên<br />
kia bờ Địa Trung Hải dường như được tái<br />
hiện trọn vẹn tại bờ Tây nước Mỹ.<br />
