the street to keep up with Papa’s long stride.
Everyone stared at the man in the cowboy hat
and cowboy boots. Papa gave them each a big
smile. “I’m breaking trail for you,” he called
back to the kids, “so keep up little doggies.
Chop-chop!”
“Your Papa is silly,” said Li, as she
walked faster.
“Tell us about it!” said Christina. But she
felt safe knowing that Papa would be with them
at the Great Wall.
As they walked to the train station,
Christina took in all the amazing and exotic
sights. A beautiful temple with a fancy roof
was painted bright yellow. <strong>The</strong> sweet smell of
incense wafted through the air. An outdoor
market was piled high with carpets, stacks of
many-tentacled squid, strange fruits, and even
songbirds in cages—all for sale to the many
shoppers who bargained for a good price—
jiangjia, Li called it.
Soon they began to ride escalator after
escalator.
“Is this the world’s longest escalator?”
asked Grant in amazement.
