36 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Mystery</strong> on the Great Wall of China It seemed eerie to go inside the dark, cool movie theater after being out in the bright, noisy city. <strong>The</strong>y all settled back to watch the short film about Chinese history. Grant and Christina had sympathy for Li and Cong after learning that China’s history dated back more than 10,000 years! That was a lot of facts to learn to pass tests in school, thought Christina. <strong>The</strong> story of China was fascinating and confusing. <strong>The</strong>re were a lot of wars. <strong>The</strong>y were impressed by all the beautiful art the Chinese had made. <strong>The</strong> film showed tapestries, vases, and, of course, the Great Wall. <strong>The</strong>y were surprised to learn that the Chinese had invented the wheelbarrow, paper, the decimal system, printing, the magnetic compass, the seismometer to measure earthquakes, and gunpowder—the source of all those fireworks! <strong>The</strong>y also invented the abacus, called the first computer. <strong>The</strong> Cultural Revolution seemed like a sad and terrible part of China’s history. Christina
<strong>The</strong> Forbidden City 37 didn’t understand all the parts about Communism and was glad when they got to the part about modern China and its economic boom. Just as the kids began to get bored, the movie ended. <strong>The</strong>y walked back out into the bright sunshine, squinting. “Christina! Li!” Grant hissed, as Mimi and Papa walked on ahead. “What?” asked Christina, waiting up for the two boys. As the kids huddled in a small knot, Grant told the girls how they had seen the angry man beneath the dragon costume. Grant then showed them the fortune cookie that said he would find them at the Forbidden City. “Well, we’d better be on the lookout,” said Christina. “What does he look like?” Grant looked puzzled. “Like a Chinese man,” he finally said in exasperation. “Like all these Chinese men!” “I might recognize him,” said Cong. “Did you notice the scar he had over his eyebrow? And when he pulled his dragon costume up, I saw a yellow silk lining in his suit coat.” “That’s not much help,” said Li.
