52 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Mystery</strong> on the Great Wall of China
“Is where what?” Papa asked, surprised to
see his grandson look so disappointed.
“Uh, is where the Great Wall isn’t…”
said Grant.
Papa laughed. “Oh, we’ll get to the Great
Wall, I promise,” he said. “But a detour to
exciting Hong Kong won’t hurt us, will it?”
<strong>The</strong> four children did not answer because
they really weren’t so sure about that.
Within the hour, the group had returned to
the Marco Polo, quickly packed their overnight
bags, and were headed to the airport. <strong>The</strong>y would
be in Hong Kong in time for dinner, Papa said.
“And,” said Mimi, “you won’t even miss
the fireworks.”
<strong>The</strong> children were puzzled by this remark,
but they were too busy powwowing in the back
seat of the taxi to wonder what Mimi meant.
“How do you think this happened?”
Christina whispered urgently to the other kids.
“I’ll bet the mean man was in the
restaurant,” said Li. “I’ll bet he overheard your
grandparents discussing a trip to Hong Kong. <strong>The</strong>n
he paid a waiter to deliver that fortune cookie to
Grant…and he knew just what message to write!”
