gift shops around <strong>the</strong> world.”<br />
“Jade has been carved and polished by <strong>the</strong><br />
Chinese for thousands <strong>of</strong> years,” Mrs. Fu<br />
explained.<br />
“However,” said Mr. Fu with a frown, “<strong>the</strong><br />
local news here is full <strong>of</strong> a scandalous story <strong>of</strong> a<br />
jade thief in <strong>China</strong>. Somehow, he is stealing<br />
some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most prized pieces that should be<br />
going to museums. No <strong>on</strong>e knows who he is or<br />
how he is getting away with this. It has upset <strong>the</strong><br />
jade market tremendously.”<br />
Christina wasn’t sure <strong>of</strong> Chinese etiquette,<br />
but she thought it was OK for kids to talk at dinner,<br />
so she asked, “So…when you say jade, you mean<br />
that pretty green st<strong>on</strong>e? Mimi has a jade chess set.”<br />
Mr. Fu nodded. “But jade can also come<br />
in brown or black, and most especially prized<br />
is white.”<br />
Mrs. Fu reached into her purse and pulled<br />
out two small jade animals and put <strong>the</strong>m <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
table. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>y were very green.<br />
“Those are beautiful!” said Christina. She<br />
touched <strong>on</strong>e piece with her finger and it felt<br />
smooth and cool.
