Pen Pals<br />

As <strong>the</strong>y drove from <strong>the</strong> airport into<br />

Beijing, <strong>the</strong> kids chatted merrily in <strong>the</strong> back seat<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> van. It was still very early in <strong>the</strong> morning,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> city was already bustling. Christina was<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly half listening, as she marveled at <strong>the</strong><br />

old/new combinati<strong>on</strong>s she saw al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> way:<br />

soaring skyscrapers…water buffalo pulling a<br />

plow in a field…lazy lakes with red-sailed boats<br />

called junks…a rush hour traffic jam…people in<br />

red silk dresses with drag<strong>on</strong> designs…and o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

in serious black business suits. It was amazing!<br />

“Christina!” Li said, to get <strong>the</strong><br />

daydreaming girl’s attenti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

“Sorry, Li,” Christina mumbled, turning<br />

away from <strong>the</strong> window to look at her favorite<br />

pen pal. Li was petite with glistening black hair
