110 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Mystery</strong> on the Great Wall of China
“Oh, you’ll want to hear this one,” said
Papa. “It’s about a famous American fighter
pilot named Bob Scott. After he returned from
World War II, he got the idea that he wanted to
walk the Great Wall of China.”
“You mean part of it, right?” asked Cong.
“Nope!” said Papa, waving his arms back
and forth. “He wanted to walk the whole thing!
And he did, too! It took him an entire year. And
before he left home, he baked himself 1,000
special, extra-healthy chocolate chip cookies—
and that’s what he ate while he walked!”
“Great story,” said Li.
“Really good story,” said Christina. “Can
we walk on the Great Wall now?”
“Of course!” said Papa. “You mean you
haven’t been up there yet? <strong>The</strong>re isn’t much
time before the train leaves, better hurry.
Oops!” he said, suddenly, looking all around. “I
forgot the backpacks in the gift shop where I was
buying Mimi a souvenir. I’ll be right back or
meet you over there.” He pointed toward the
path to the train station.
“OK,” said Christina. “Take your time,
Papa,” she encouraged her grandfather.
