Li explained eagerly. “This amazing army
made of clay was discovered by some Chinese
workers digging a well. It turned out that an
emperor ordered more than 700,000 people to
work on his tomb. It took them at least 36 years
to make this enormous army to accompany him
to the afterlife.”
Christina peered closely at the photos and
the replica of one soldier. “<strong>The</strong>y each have a
different expression,” she marveled, “and
different hairstyles. It’s amazing.”
“And once they were each painted in bright
colors,” added Cong, pointing to another picture.
“But that faded away over time and, as you can see,
the wooden weapons they once held rotted away.”
“If I was digging a well and saw this,” said
Grant, “I’d think I was dreaming!”
Suddenly, Grant grew very quiet.
Christina could tell just by looking at her brother
that he was upset.
“What is it, Grant?” she whispered, as Li
and Cong continued to examine the Terracotta
Army display.
Grant nodded toward a dark booth. “I
think the man sitting there is looking at us,” he
said nervously.
