Caring for Children BTEC Level 1

Entry requirements
• 2 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above in both English
& maths, however, GCSE grade 3 (D) would be
preferable.
• We will do an assessment to find out which
course level is right for you.
• A positive attitude and a keen interest in caring
for children.
• You will also come to an introductory ‘taster’
session before the course starts, to see if it is the
right course for you.
About the course
This course is very ‘hands on’ and gives you lots of
practical experience with children to prepare you for
working in nurseries or other childcare settings.
You learn about creative activities, stories, poems
& rhymes, healthy eating, keeping children safe and
communication with children. You study personal &
social development skills to help with your studies
and finding a job. You will study GCSE qualifications
in maths and English. As part of the Foundation
Learning offer, this course gives you an introduction
to lots of other subjects as well as Childcare.
Your future
After completing your course, you could move on to
the Children’s Play, Learning & Development (Early
Years Assistant) BTEC Level 2 Technical Diploma or
on to an apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

A full Level 1 at Pass grade, plus a GCSE grade 3
(D) or above in English & maths.
• You will have an interview and further assessment
to check the course is right for you.
• A keen interest in working with children.
• A clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
at the start of the course.
About the course
This course is an ideal qualification if you want to
progress in to employment in the early years’ sector.
You learn the skills, knowledge and behaviours
expected by employers in the early years’ sector.
This includes learning about the policy & practice
for working in early years, child development and
supporting children’s learning through play, as well
as how to support children’s communication and
literacy & language development.
There are two external assessments and you will
have an opportunity to do GCSE maths and English if
you need to. You will also complete a work placement
for 280 hours to give you a practical insight in to the
industry.
Please note, you need to buy a College polo shirt
(approx £14).
Your future
On successful completion of the course, you
could progress to the Children’s Play, Learning &
Development BTEC Level 3 National Foundation
Diploma or use the skills and experience you have
gained to find employment in the industry.
