Caring for Children BTEC Level 1<br />
Introductory Certificate<br />
Course length: 1 year | Code: 5014<br />
Entry requirements<br />
• 2 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above in both English<br />
& maths, however, GCSE grade 3 (D) would be<br />
preferable.<br />
• We will do an assessment to find out which<br />
course level is right for you.<br />
• A positive attitude and a keen interest in caring<br />
for children.<br />
• You will also come to an introductory ‘taster’<br />
session before the course starts, to see if it is the<br />
right course for you.<br />
About the course<br />
This course is very ‘hands on’ and gives you lots of<br />
practical experience with children to prepare you for<br />
working in nurseries or other childcare settings.<br />
You learn about creative activities, stories, poems<br />
& rhymes, healthy eating, keeping children safe and<br />
communication with children. You study personal &<br />
social development skills to help with your studies<br />
and finding a job. You will study GCSE qualifications<br />
in maths and English. As part of the Foundation<br />
Learning offer, this course gives you an introduction<br />
to lots of other subjects as well as Childcare.<br />
Your future<br />
After completing your course, you could move on to<br />
the Children’s Play, Learning & Development (Early<br />
Years Assistant) BTEC Level 2 Technical Diploma or<br />
on to an apprenticeship.<br />

• You will have an interview and further assessment<br />
to check the course is right for you.<br />
• A keen interest in working with children.<br />
• A clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check<br />
at the start of the course.<br />
About the course<br />
This course is an ideal qualification if you want to<br />
progress in to employment in the early years’ sector.<br />
You learn the skills, knowledge and behaviours<br />
expected by employers in the early years’ sector.<br />
This includes learning about the policy & practice<br />
for working in early years, child development and<br />
supporting children’s learning through play, as well<br />
as how to support children’s communication and<br />
literacy & language development.<br />
There are two external assessments and you will<br />
have an opportunity to do GCSE maths and English if<br />
you need to. You will also complete a work placement<br />
for 280 hours to give you a practical insight in to the<br />
industry.<br />
Please note, you need to buy a <strong>College</strong> polo shirt<br />
(approx £14).<br />
Your future<br />
On successful completion of the course, you<br />
could progress to the Children’s Play, Learning &<br />
Development BTEC Level 3 National Foundation<br />
Diploma or use the skills and experience you have<br />
gained to find employment in the industry.<br />
