New 1-9 GCSE grades and what they mean<br />

The numerical grades can be seen throughout this guide with the previously used letter grades in brackets<br />

- e.g. Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English or maths.<br />

If you are applying for a course and have the old A - G GCSE grades, please reference the table for the new<br />

numerical equivalent.<br />

Assessment<br />

Many of our courses have some externally assessed<br />

units. You will often be assessed in other ways with<br />

internally marked assignments, including building a<br />

portfolio of work, practical tasks and presentations.<br />

These and other types of evidence will form part of<br />

your final grade.<br />

Additional Study (study programmes)<br />

English & maths<br />

At <strong>Shipley</strong> <strong>College</strong>, we recognise the importance of<br />

students having good English and maths skills.<br />

These skills are very important for your future<br />

studies and employment prospects. Our approach<br />

will help you enjoy these subjects as you learn and<br />

achieve better grades.<br />

<strong>Full</strong>-<strong>time</strong> students<br />

If you are 16-18 years old, on a full-<strong>time</strong> course and<br />

have not yet achieved GCSE grade 4 (C) or above in<br />

English and maths, you will continue to study these<br />

subjects.<br />

If you have already achieved GCSE grade 4 (C)<br />

or above in English or maths, why not look in to<br />

improving your qualifications?<br />

We have AS English or Core Maths on offer. See page<br />

58 for more information.<br />

Apprentices<br />

You may also study ICT, as well as English and maths,<br />

as part of your course.<br />
