“My God, what do we do?” someone gasped. Though I was the
stranger in the group, action was required and I took charge. I looked
around and quickly spotted a likely looking pile of rocks. “Okay
everyone, bring the food over here before the bags break.” I took the
packages and placed them in the crags of the rocks where I hoped they
would survive until I could retrieve them.
“Now let’s head for the house.”
Lightened up, we were able to pick up the pace. I grabbed Sylvia’s bag
so she could keep up. Barry did the same for Marty. When Jerry
laughingly offered to carry Louise’s bag, she suggested that we’d
probably get there faster if she carried Jerry’s instead. It was a
welcome bit of levity that lifted everyone’s spirit a bit. When Jerry
shouted out, “There it is,” we were probably the happiest and most
relieved group of six people on the planet at that moment. We were also
in varying degrees of utter soaked exhaustion, but thankfully at least, we
were there.
The place was indeed terrific, but enjoying it would have to wait. The
light was fading outside and every bit of food we had was back on the
rocks. I figured that since I was already soaked, there was no time like
the present. A quick appraisal of the group led me to conclude that I
was the only one in the bunch capable of making the trip. I dumped the
clothes out of my bag so I could use it for the food and headed out the
door.
I moved quickly with the empty bag and had made some progress when I
heard the shout, “Hey, wait for me.” It was Louise. She’d grabbed a
cloth shopping bag from the kitchen and followed. She had really moved
to catch me. We found the stash moments later and were able to repack
