Still, in spite of repressive forces in play, the process of free thought has
been enabled to flourish, thanks largely to the separation of church and
state pioneered by the Founding Fathers and adopted widely. This is
true even though there is still a ways to go to engender the global peace
we all hope to see in our lifetime. Having said that, nothing impedes this
writer and this reader from the all-important quest for peace in our own
lives.
It is an important distinction because much of history has been defined
by the inter-woven power of church and governing forces, still wielded
over the minds and lives of people throughout the world, and currently
on full display in many of the conflicts playing out on today’s world
stage.
Thankfully, throughout history there have been beacons of light,
individuals who were unsatisfied with the strictures and rituals of
institutions. They sought their own relationship with truth that could
empower them in every-day life. They longed for an inner peace and
meaning to their existence. They questioned and pushed, and their ideas
moved things along the evolutionary process of free thought. That
freedom, it has been learned, carries with it the right and the
responsibility of each individual to examine and think about their own
individual life and what they are doing to enhance or detract from its
quality.
This right and responsibility includes giving up the shifting of blame for
everything that goes wrong onto someone or something else, the
acceptance of personal responsibility for the quality of one’s life, and
the continuing commitment to learn, evolve and grow.
