THE EPIDEMIC The continual unfolding of events, and the revelation of subsequent results throughout the world, illustrates just how much of a challenge making correct choices can be. This is due, in large measure, to the widespread confusion that exists regarding “how life really works.” Even the most imaginative writers of fiction would be hard pressed to dream up the unceasing scenarios of real life dramas, about people from every nook and stratum of life who mindlessly throw monkey wrenches into their own lives. They are all individuals, who for some reason, have failed to learn or chosen to ignore, the fundamental principles of life. It is not, however, a problem of some particular socio-economic, political, racial, or any other designation of group. Rather, it cuts across them all. Moreover, the effect is felt not only by the individual themselves, but also by related family members, communities, companies and even countries. There is one aspect of this story which is particularly unfathomable, yet equally of interest to note. Namely, how little effect this endless and continual disclosure of dire results from debased actions appears to have on subsequent offenders. One might conclude that there is little or no connection made until the hammer of consequences arrives between one’s own two eyes. Even then, in many cases, the culprit rationalizes away the truth as bad luck, or some other bogeyman. This tendency to look anyplace but in the mirror for the explanation of why one’s life has gone this way or that, seems to be a common characteristic of the human condition. One could explore this conundrum endlessly and still not resolve it.
