criminal charges named officials in forty towns.
“We believe we have surfaced a deeply rooted system of corruption
that rots the core of municipal government,” Mr. Sheer said. “It is
a way of life, a practice established over the years.”
From the point of view of this treatment, it is noteworthy that many of
those involved were citizens of good standing in their communities,
selected to fulfill the public trust in responsible positions. They
represent normal, everyday people with homes, kids in school, aging
parents, a family dog, and normal pressures and bills to pay. Somehow,
though, they accepted in themselves as standard operating procedure,
behavior that is totally unacceptable.
They most likely failed to grasp the causal connection between their
thoughts, words and actions and the resulting impact on their lives and
the lives of those closest to them, the very ones they most want to
protect!
Due to this lack of understanding about how life really works, they
created circumstances which now affect them in a very real way. They
probably didn’t think of themselves as crooks. They probably
participated in joking about others who had fallen in various scandals,
never considering themselves at the same risk or putting themselves in
the same nefarious category.
A similarly mind-boggling story was reported by a Connecticut
newspaper titled, “80 Fugitives Are Snared With Phony Mail.” The
