During that time, along with family, career and all the rest, I have had the opportunity to study personally with some of the great teachers of our age. A Story About David At the time we met, David was a securities analyst with a large mutual fund company in Boston. He’d been raised in Canada, son of a prominent local businessman and had completed his education at Harvard. David was considered to be a competent professional analyst responsible for understanding the investment characteristics of companies in several industries. The career path for someone like David was to work as an analyst for an unspecified period of time, then move into fund management which carried the ultimate buy/sell responsibility. It was in this portfolio management role that one could distinguish themselves by virtue of their documented investment track record, a challenge that David relished taking on. There was no specific criteria for why and when someone would be plucked from the ranks of the analysts and be anointed, “Fund Manager”. It was more a subjective judgment of the firm’s top management that included investment acumen as well as personality dynamics. When we crossed paths, David had been working diligently as an analyst for about ten years. Several of his peers had been promoted, but for some reason, David had not.
