worked hard, was devoted to his family, attended church regularly and<br />
actively participated in athletics. He believed that each activity one<br />
engaged in should be done with total concentration and focus.<br />
Clayton’s view was that an individual’s responsibilities included doing<br />
their job as best they could, taking care of their family and keeping<br />
themselves in good physical, emotional, and spiritual shape. He<br />
believed that without a strong physical body to support the individual,<br />
that career and family would surely suffer. As a result, he exercised<br />
vigorously every day. “Every day,” I retorted. “How could a guy with<br />
so many demands exercise every day? I could sit at my desk 28 hours a<br />
day and still not feel that my work was done. His job is ten times more<br />
complex than mine. How does he do it?” She smiled again.<br />
“See this,” she said, pointing to his appointment book. “If he doesn’t<br />
have an official luncheon appointment, he goes to the gym and works<br />
out. He never has lunch for fun. If he does have a lunch date, he<br />
automatically has a vital, out-of-the-office meeting at 10:30 where he is<br />
unreachable (at the gym, of course). He very rarely gives up both time<br />
slots on any given day.” By maintaining that discipline, she explained,<br />
Clayton was able to maintain a high level of physical conditioning and<br />
do it in the context of his day. That was important, she said, because he<br />
liked to reserve evenings for his wife and children. She pointed out that<br />
his resolve at maintaining this discipline had not seemed to hurt his<br />
professional stature.<br />
On the contrary, Clayton believed that staying strong physically allowed<br />
him to work harder, handle pressure more easily, stay focused and be<br />
generally more effective in everything he did. It also gave him the<br />
energy to be present for his wife and kids when he got home. It was all<br />
