A few days before his death, I sat at Rabe’s bedside and held his hand.
He was very weak but had the strength to say a few words to me. “My
boy, if you ever get angry, resentful, or jealous, try like heck to stop
yourself. I know the reason I’m here today about to die. It’s because of
all my anger toward the school. I could have found something
productive to do, but all I did was sit and think about how much I hated
them and how they had done me a dirty deed. Now this is the price I’m
paying. Please learn from this and don’t ever have to pay this price
yourself.”
He told me he was grateful that he’d realized what he’d done so he
could forgive everyone before he died. He’d had a wonderful life he told
me, and didn’t want it to end in bitterness. Those last few days told the
story. Nearly half the city came by the hospital to express their love for
him, which gave him great happiness at the end.
What Uncle Rabe taught me is something that I’ll never forget.
Thoughts of anger, resentment, envy, and unforgivingness are powerful
forces even capable of causing physical disease. Not for the person who
caused the anger, but for the one feeling it! Thank you Uncle Rabe, for
that powerful lesson.
