at the thought of the bedraggled, sopping bunch we were that day.
She never made it back to her life in the city. There were some hopeful
signs, and even a party planned for what we thought was another try.
However, a near miss, this time with a gun, short-circuited that idea.
Eventually she succeeded. Jerry called to tell me. He was disconsolate.
She had shut herself in her car, in her parents’ garage with the engine
on. Her mom had found her.
When I think about Louise I ask myself, and others have posed the same
question, “Did Louise even have a choice?” Admittedly, it’s way over
my head to understand that kind of pain. Some would say that neither
Louise nor Herb are actually appropriate illustrations for this book
because for them there was no choice. It is a particularly sensitive matter
for those who have experienced similar trauma with a close friend or
family. I feel them.
But, when I think hard on it, nobody helped Herb to light up, and
likewise as tragic as it is, Sylvia planned out each step carefully. She
alone closed the garage doors, and she alone put the key in that ignition
and turned it on. She would still be with us, except that she so didn’t
want to be.
So ultimately I have to conclude that yes, she was the one who did make
those choices, the last one of which finally worked! Honestly however,
if you feel you have reason to disagree, you have every right. Because
you know why? It’s another one of those things in life, the truth of
which is simply unknowable. In the end, the best we can hope to draw
from such stark examples, is some lesson for ourselves about the
ramifications of the decisions that we make each moment of every day.
