As I read the article, I became agitated on behalf of the industry, both
that the Professors would write such an article, and that the publication
would run it. And it was in that moment that I was struck by the idea that
would lead to the formation of Hedge Funds Care. It occurred to me that
someone should use the article to bring the industry together for a good
cause, to counteract the terrible publicity of the article at hand and
others like it.
At about the same time, I again noticed the book from Genevieve. As I
said it was now four months after my birthday and I hadn’t so much as
cracked it open. “Ok fool,” I thought, open the darn book! Rather than
start at the beginning, I open it to a random page. The first quote I read
is one I had heard before:
“The road to hell is paved with good intentions!”
That gave me a little shiver down my spine as I thought about the friend
I had let down. It was the kind you get when you know you’ve been
caught dead to rights! My intention had been fine, but my followthrough
was terrible! It was not even a zero score. It was actually a zero
minus even more. Then I saw the other half of that quote for the first
time.
“The road to heaven is paved with good actions!”
That was like an arrow though my neck! Where were my actions on my
friend’s behalf? The actions I had promised. Without actions, my
promise had been hollow and good for nothing!
Add to it the fact that I was just now reading this book? A gift from my
child’s! Bad, bad man! Then it got worse! I turned to another page, and
another quote jumped out at me. It said:
“We’re all alike in what we say. It’s in what we do that we differ.”
