A Story About Herbert<br />

Herb was a mostly fun and fascinating study in contrasts. He was an<br />

important friend and mentor to me at a time in life when I needed<br />

guidance, something he gave with humor and gusto. Unfortunately, he<br />

passed away long before his time from his particular demon, smokinginduced<br />

emphysema.<br />

Herb was bright, witty, good-natured and almost always a pleasure to<br />

be around. Naturally, he was adored by his family and a wide circle of<br />

friends. He also achieved a certain level of success, and while the<br />

preservation of money was not one of his strong points, he always<br />

seemed to live well and enjoy life. That is until his habitual smoking<br />

began to wreak havoc on his physical body.<br />

I knew Herb as well as anyone. Despite our age difference, we were<br />

close friends and business associates. The tale of how that came to be is<br />

a story unto itself, but one we’ll save that for another day. Without<br />

question, Herb was the most charming conversationalist, quickest<br />

quipper and most potent punster I’ve ever seen in action. To say it<br />

again – it was very hard not to like Herbert.<br />

Herb’s life was a veritable whirlwind of events. He was a fountain of<br />

ideas for new ventures, or ways to improve existing ones. When he<br />

focused his tremendous energy on some challenge, you could be sure<br />

that positive change would follow quickly and detractors would soon be<br />

converted to fans.<br />

This was a function of what I described as Herb’s unassailable good<br />

nature. He only would advocate actions which were clearly for the<br />

greater good of all involved and he considered it fundamental to leave
