MORE ABOUT THE TITLE A certain grandmother I referenced earlier would respond to life’s situations with expressions like: “Well Dear, you made your bed, now you can lie in it.” Another of her favorites was: “Ok my Darling, now you can just go and stew in your own juice!” Every culture has their own version of these common sense-inspired homilies. They testify that the circumstances one finds oneself in are the result of one’s own doing. We may blame everyone and everything else around us, but as Granny so eloquently quipped: “Hey Kiddo, nobody made or didn’t make the bed, and nobody picked the ingredients of the soup, but you!” Now, like many before and after her, Granny had a lot easier time seeing and pointing out the folly of my ways than her own. In fact, in my life, I’ve provided the perfect opportunity for many people in a wide variety of circumstances to observe my ill-advised choices in life, and have witnessed Granny’s affliction in many of them. However, the worst offender I’ve ever met, greets me daily in the mirror. We all know that the people around us on some level, are causing their own misery, and may even witness some of them repeat the same destructive actions over and over. It’s always seeing that in ourselves which is the trick. I relayed earlier where and when I first heard the title of this book used to explain the reason for someone’s comeuppance, but I’ve heard it many times since. It is usually spoken by someone in a most reverent
and knowing manner. “Oh well,” I can hear them say, what goes around comes around, as everyone invariably shakes their head in agreement. It’s as though that says it all. Like some sage wisdom that the speaker learned someplace, but isn’t sure where. The fall from grace, was shocking at first, but less so when we find out what led up to it. We all intuitively understand this. After all, what goes around... does actually... come around. We just don’t know when!
