it wasn’t long before I began to witness a series of incidents during<br />

which he would lose his composure. These incidents were characterized<br />

by Peter screaming at someone, face contorted in rage, veins bulging<br />

and abusive language streaming forth. The object of his onslaught<br />

always seemed to be either his secretary or someone else he considered<br />

to be an underling that he could take out his rage on. That person was<br />

often reduced to tears and always to humiliation. These incidents were<br />

particularly notable, aside from their ferocity, due to the insignificance<br />

of their cause, which was usually something quite trivial.<br />

These outbursts appeared to be tolerated by management because of<br />

Peter’s effectiveness with clients, to whom of course, he never displayed<br />

such behavior. He was also very charming and funny in his banter with<br />

associates and generally liked by his peers, despite their cringes when<br />

he’d go off on a tirade.<br />

There was one particularly large deal that Peter had been working on<br />

for some time. He said it was the biggest of his career and suggested<br />

that it was also the Firm’s largest ever. He revealed to certain<br />

associates that its successful completion would finally bring him the<br />

recognition he so deserved. He had been sorely wounded by his<br />

demotion, even though he was fond of telling anyone who would listen<br />

that, “He hadn’t enjoyed being everyone’s nursemaid and psychoanalyst<br />

anyway.” The Firm, he believed, would now be forced to reward him<br />

both monetarily and by promoting him to a more senior position,<br />

perhaps even a “partnership “. This deal would surely convince them<br />

that he was an indispensable and most valued asset.<br />

The day finally arrived for the meeting between the clients and senior<br />

management of the firm, when Peter would make his formal presentation<br />

to wrap up the deal. The time was set for 3:00 P.M. Peter had already
