So far, the discussion of cause has dealt mainly with actions. No less<br />
important, though more demanding on the comprehension, is the causal<br />
power of thoughts and words. It is not true that the act alone has power.<br />
Thoughts and words are more subtle forms of the same powerful cause,<br />
and they produce the correspondingly more subtle, less obvious response<br />
in one’s outer world.<br />
This notion causes a great deal of consternation and debate. Nobody<br />
wants to think that a word or a thought passing through their mind really<br />
has any power. It is almost impossible to deal with because it means<br />
that feelings of anger, envy, resentment, and the like, as well as the<br />
words that express those feelings, are definite inputs of a negative<br />
variety that will show up in some unpleasant way in one’s own life.<br />
“Okay, the action is understandable,” one might say. “I can see that if I<br />
murder someone, I’ve set myself up to either be killed or spend a long,<br />
miserable time in prison. Or, I can see how cheating on an exam, not<br />
doing my homework, or beating my children are all actions that set up<br />
fittingly unpleasant results. But how can talking about or thinking about<br />
those things hurt me?”<br />
Efforts to answer this question have filled many books. It is most clearly<br />
embodied, however, by people you have probably known who spend a<br />
lot of time and energy in a state of constantly expressing their misery.<br />
It may take the form of complaining about some injustice they’ve<br />
suffered, or running critical commentary about the people in their life.<br />
Perhaps they overly dwell on hurts and resentments.<br />
Recall the results you observed in those folk’s lives. What good came<br />
