Semester Note: Acting Intensive Workshop (2 Days): Actors
are crucial members of any filmmaking team. They are
the ones who create the characters that ultimately pull an
audience into the story. No matter the genre, be it comedy,
drama, or action adventure, the actor’s goal is to help the
audience empathize with the hero’s struggle and to get
emotionally involved in the hero’s journey. This intensive
two-day workshop gives students a practical understanding
of the art and craft of acting as well as clear, practical tips
on how to help on-camera actors do their best work. The
insights students gain should help them become better
filmmakers — directors, writers, producers, editors — as
well as better actors. The best way to collaborate with
actors is to understand what acting itself entails. Through
discussions, screenings, and exercises, students will sharpen
their directing and acting skills and improve their ability to
draw out the best possible performance. A special feature
of this workshop is to give students an opportunity to direct
professional actors brought in to perform a scene.
“The reason I chose the Centennial program was to give
myself the gift of being creative for eight months. I walked
away with three short films, two of which were nominated for
awards, including a Canadian Comedy Award.”
