The gang took shifts. Giles made a schedule. Willow remained a constant, refusing<br />

to let go of her friend until she couldn’t feel a heartbeat.<br />

With Ms Calendar fulfilling her hour one duties, the rest sat in the living room,<br />

trying to comprehend.<br />

Cordelia turned to Spike, who was sitting on the stairs. “Why don’t you just do it<br />

again. Make sure he’s dead this time, before you stop.”<br />

Buffy dropped her head in her hands and Giles took a gulp of scotch.<br />

“Because, half-wit, there’s nothing left to take.”<br />

“Then how can his heart still be beating.”<br />

Spike stood up quickly and practically shouted at her, “Well, I don’t know, do I?”<br />

He stalked to the door and grabbed his duster which had been politely hung on the<br />

coat rack. “I’ll be off, then.”<br />

Buffy was by his side in a second. Spike held up his hands.
