“You little bitch! Couldn’t you see she wasn’t fighting you back? She didn’t have<br />

the strength! You just dusted her. Didn’t even give her a bleedin’ chance. If she was<br />

back to herself she could have killed you with a fingernail! Don’t know anything<br />

about a fair fight, you fucking slut!”<br />

At that, Angel shifted his grip on Spike to one arm tight around his neck and used<br />

the other arm to punch Spike in the back.<br />

“Angel, let him go.” This, surprisingly, came from Buffy. Angel, Xander, and even<br />

Spike looked at her in shock. “He’s right. I didn’t give her a chance to fight. If he<br />

wants to fight for her now, he can. It’s not like it’ll bring her back.” Buffy kicked<br />

absently at a small pile of dust at her feet. Spike roared and slid into game face.<br />

“Buffy, you can’t kill him,” Angel explained still holding fast to Spike.<br />

Buffy rolled her eyes. “I know that.”<br />

“He’s out for blood. I can’t make him promise not to kill you.”<br />

“He won’t kill me.”<br />

“How do you know?”<br />

Buffy looked at Angel like he was an idiot. It was gratifying. “Because I won’t let<br />

him. Give me a little credit, would ya. Slayer, here.” Buffy threw the stake away<br />

and tightened her stance. “Let him go.”<br />

Angel held on. “I’m stepping in if it gets too bad.” Buffy shrugged. Angel let go of<br />

Spike and stepped back.<br />

The vampire flew at Buffy. She jumped out of the way at the very last moment, and<br />

Spike’s skull cracked a headstone. He took a couple seconds to clear his head then<br />

turned toward her again. This time when he came at her, he was much more<br />

focused.<br />

Xander walked up to Angel. The two just stood and watched the fight. It was truly
