engine, <strong>of</strong> 10-horse power, with 2 boilers ; 24 men and 13 boys are cmployed<br />

Shenandoah Ciir or <strong>the</strong> Lost Creek Colliery.— Operated by <strong>the</strong> Philadelphia<br />

Goal Company, on <strong>the</strong> Gi^^ard Heirs Edate.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> 2 slopes opening Nos. 2 and 4. No. 2 is <strong>the</strong> old slope, <strong>of</strong><br />

double track plan, while 100 yards east <strong>of</strong> No. 2 No. 4 slope is sunk ; 200<br />

yards deeper, while on its west gangway, and directly under <strong>the</strong> old slope,<br />

Mr. D. P. Brown contrives to work up a breast and timber it as a slope to<br />

connect <strong>the</strong> old one without fur<strong>the</strong>r cost to <strong>the</strong> company, as is <strong>the</strong> case at<br />

Lehigh, No. 3, which is his plan. The principle work doing in No. 2 is<br />

while <strong>the</strong> No. 4 slope is driving<br />

robbing out pillars and draining <strong>the</strong> 'mine ;<br />

gangways, air courses and second outlets, and starting<br />

which work carries no expense.<br />

Ellangowan (shaft) Colliery.— Operated by tlie P. and R. Goal and Pron<br />

Company, on <strong>the</strong>ir oivn lands.<br />

Situated at Mapledale, midway betweeu Mahanoy and Shenandoah cities.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a shaft sunk 111 yards deep to <strong>the</strong> middle split <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> E vein.<br />

The E vein is here found in three prongs, namely : The bottom prong is 12<br />

feet thick, <strong>the</strong> middle prong is 11 feet, and <strong>the</strong> upper prong is 10 feet thick,<br />

with 194 yards <strong>of</strong> breast runs, which will bear to be divided into two lifts<br />

each, and worked by counter-workings, which when opened for full mining<br />

will give 12 gangways. West <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shaft a tunnel opens <strong>the</strong> Primrose or<br />

G vein, which when opened will again afford 4 more gangways, and which<br />

will allow <strong>of</strong> counter-workings 2 lifts, making 8 gangways <strong>of</strong> 95 yards <strong>of</strong><br />

a lift; <strong>the</strong> colliery will aflord 20 gangways, with 2| mile run to each. The<br />

colliery, when under a full and fair working order, will be able to produce<br />

1,500 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> per day. The <strong>coal</strong> mined here at present is manufactured<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Knickerbocker breaker. Thirteen breasts are working ; a 40-horse<br />

power fan is used for ventilation, which affords an ample supply for present<br />

purposes. Two engines, <strong>of</strong> 40-horse power each, with 6 boilers are in use ;<br />

60 men and 6 boys are employed ; 13 mules and 60 wagons and 2,600 yards<br />

<strong>of</strong> tracks are in use.<br />

Grant Colliery, near Mahanoy Tunnel.— Operated by Moodey d- Co., on<br />

lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lehigh Valley Railroad Company.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> 2 lifts opened by tunnels north opening <strong>the</strong> D and B veins.<br />

The B vein is still working, which is rendered somewhat difficult to work<br />

ov/ing to an irregular top. Ventilation so far is produced by natural means<br />

but is inadequate for a full supply. Three engines, <strong>of</strong> 65-horse power, with<br />

4 boilers are in use ; 63 men and 21 boys are employed ; 9 mules and 28<br />

waTfons are in use.
