MEni;iA>[ CoLiJERY.— Oivned and Operated by Oie P. and 11. C. and I. Go.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> 2 slope opening's, to wit : A<br />

<strong>coal</strong> slope and a pumping<br />

slope. The <strong>coal</strong> is hoisted in tanks 1-10 feet above <strong>the</strong> slope to <strong>the</strong> breaker<br />

level. A self-acting plane is nsed to work <strong>the</strong> counter levels, 38 breasts<br />

are open in <strong>the</strong> colliery, and all admirably worked. The works are ventilated<br />

by a 20-horse power fan, and its results are quite satisfactory, and is<br />

classed as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best in <strong>the</strong> district. Steam power=375-horse, with<br />

20 boilers are in use ; 190 men and 55 boys are employed ; 86,630 tons <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>coal</strong> had been mined.<br />

Helfe.vstine Colliery.— Owned and Operated by <strong>the</strong> P. and E. Coal and<br />

Iron Company.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a tunnel and slope opening, <strong>the</strong> tunnel is now idle. The<br />

slope is sunk inside, opening <strong>the</strong> Lykens Vallej^ vein in 12 feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>,<br />

with 8 breasts open, nothing is done at present on its east panel, nothing<br />

<strong>of</strong> importance had been done during <strong>the</strong> year. The power is=165-horse,<br />

with 5 boilers. The colliery is Avell ventilated by a 20-horse power fan.<br />

15,974 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> had been mined since resumption took place, employing<br />

165 hands.<br />

Ben Franklin Qo'lme'ry.— Operated by Thomas Baumgarden, on lands <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> P. and Pi. Coal and Iron Company.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> 2 drift openings. The Lykens A^ alley vein is open in 8 feet<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>, its east panel is idle, 12 breasts are open on its west panel and 12<br />

breasts are open on <strong>the</strong> upper panel in 4| feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> ; a slope is now in<br />

course <strong>of</strong> sinking which will when completed constitute this one <strong>of</strong> our<br />

best collieries. The good top rock makes mining a safe operation. One<br />

engine, <strong>of</strong> 25-horse power, with 3 boilers are in use ; 100 men and 30 boys<br />

are employed ; 46,905 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> had been mined.<br />

Buck Ridge Colliery.— Isaac Jilay, Operator, on lands <strong>of</strong> Ilenshaio it- Johnson.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> 2 slopes and 5 drift openings. Twenty-five men are eraployed<br />

in robbing out pillars in <strong>the</strong>se drifts. A slope is sunk through <strong>the</strong>se<br />

levels, and a cross-cut tunnel opens No. 9 vein at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slope.<br />

Both gangways are comparatively idle. Twenty-five breasts are open in<br />

this slope. No. 9 vein is open by a new slope, which will extend 100<br />

3^ards under <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old slope. The colliery is ventilated by a 20horse<br />

pov/er fan. A good traveling way is available in <strong>the</strong> west panel.<br />

The power is=200, with 14 boilers. 110,000 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> had been mined.<br />

One hundred and fifty men and 40 bo^^s are emploj'ed.<br />

Cameron Colliery.—llineral P. R. and Ilining Co., Owners and Operators.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> 2 slopes and 4 drift openings on Nos. 8, 9 and 10 veins.<br />

A local basin is open by a slope, where 12 men are emplo.yed in robbing<br />

pillars and 5 breasts are working. This panel has been ventilated by a 20horse<br />

power fan. The No. 2 slope has 12 breasts open in its western panel,<br />

and 10 breasts are open in its eastern panel. In this level No. 8 vein is<br />

opened by a cross-cut, with 3 breasts open, and T breasts on its eastern
