Ellangowax Drifts.— Operated by <strong>the</strong> P. and B. Coal and Iron Com2:)any,<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir lands at 3Iapledale.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> water-level openings, in Avhicli <strong>the</strong> Mammoth, Orchard and<br />

Primrose veins are extensively worked above water-level, while <strong>the</strong> new<br />

shaft already described will open <strong>the</strong> same veins on <strong>the</strong>ir lower lifts, which<br />

will constitute this colliery one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best producing collieries in <strong>the</strong> county.<br />

Ventilation is effected by a 40-horse power fan, supplying an adequate<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> air. Three engines, <strong>of</strong> TO-horse power, with 6 boilers are in use ;<br />

200 men and 85 boys are employed ;<br />

20 mules and 100 wagons are in use.<br />

Banks & Go.'s Colliery, <strong>of</strong> Shexandoah.— O^je^'a/ec? by said firm, on <strong>the</strong><br />

Gilbert d- Sheafer estate.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a drift opening on <strong>the</strong> G vein, for home and domestic use,<br />

employing 10 hands, and selling 500 tons per month.<br />

Davis Colliery, <strong>of</strong> Shenandoah.— Operated by Mr. D., on lands <strong>of</strong> Gilbert<br />

(6 Sheafer.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a single slope, on <strong>the</strong> Orchard vein, 30 yards deep, employing<br />

6 hands ; a 5-horse power engine hoists <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> and runs <strong>the</strong> breaker,<br />

with only one boiler.<br />

Jones & Co., Shenandoah.— Operated by <strong>the</strong> said firm, on <strong>the</strong> Gilbert &<br />

Sheafer lands.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a drift opening on <strong>the</strong> Primrose vein, and aflbrds employment<br />

to 8 men ; one engine, <strong>of</strong> G-horse power, with one boiler is used ; and<br />

one mule with 4 waorons.<br />

Lehigh, No. 4, Colliery, near Shenandoah.— Operated by <strong>the</strong> Philadelphia<br />

Coal Company, on <strong>the</strong> Girard estoAe.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a slope opening tlie E vein on its south dip, and is a sister<br />

colliery to <strong>the</strong> Lost Creek collieiy, and situated in <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tract,<br />

between both collieries. It is intended to sink to <strong>the</strong> basin, and to erect<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most famous breaker buildings in <strong>the</strong> whole region, for its use.<br />

The vast body <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> that underlies this tract is simply immense, and under<br />

<strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> Col. D. P. Brown it will be a success.
