Coal Covipany, Owners and Operators.<br />

The colliery is situated at WilHamstown, and consists oi' a turuiel 1,244<br />

yards loii;.^-, cutting through <strong>the</strong> mountain into <strong>the</strong> Bear valley and opening<br />

<strong>the</strong> L. V. vein in 343 j'ards. The big vein <strong>coal</strong> in this level has been worked<br />

out, bat a cross-cut opens <strong>the</strong> L. V. vein, and mining continues in it. Three<br />

slopes are sunk on tlie big L. V. vein <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following depths : <strong>of</strong> 150, 225<br />

and 530 3'ards. The first slope is nearly exhausted <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>. The second<br />

blope is n(!arly in a like condition. The third slope has 24 breasts working,<br />

with 2 self acting planes in operation, in 8 feet <strong>of</strong> excellent <strong>coal</strong>. It is intended<br />

to sink an additional lift <strong>of</strong> 180 yards in this slope. This very extensive<br />

colliery has been well managed in all its details, with a fine rock<br />

top covering <strong>the</strong> whole vein. Two 20-horse pov/er fans are used fjr venti-<br />

lation. 290,878 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> has been mined; 560 men and 60 boj's are<br />

employed ; 2 fdtal accidents occurred during <strong>the</strong> year. All <strong>the</strong>se Dauphin<br />

county collieries are directly under <strong>the</strong> general superintendenc}'' <strong>of</strong> Major<br />

Joseph Anthony, and Col. E. G. Savage, local superintendent, and inside<br />

boss W. E. Thomas. Steam power^650 horse power, with 2t boilers, in<br />

R. Coal and Iron Company.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a drift opening a 5-foot Red Ash vein. Counter gangways<br />

are open in connection with <strong>the</strong> main gangwaj-s, it being a new colliery <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> land sale character, shipping some 815 tons, employing 4 hands, but<br />

<strong>the</strong> character <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work done is considered safe.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> a single slope, sunk into a basin <strong>of</strong> a Red Ash vein. Both<br />

dips have been v/orked b}' separate gangways, and mining at present chiefly<br />

confined to robbing out pillars 2,911 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> have been shipped ; 1<br />

engine, <strong>of</strong> 8-horse power, with 2 boilers, are in use, and a small steam pump<br />

is used Ibr drainau'e.<br />

3IoNrroij Colliery.— Georrje ]V. Johns S Bro, Operators, on lands (f <strong>the</strong><br />

P. and it. Coal and Iron Company.<br />

It consists <strong>of</strong> two slopes, to wit : The first slope is sunk 104 yards deep<br />

on <strong>the</strong> E vein to a flat, which is 66 yards in breadth. From this point a<br />

slope <strong>of</strong> 175 yards in length is sunk on a 14^ dip. The cast gangway is<br />

1,800 yards long, and passes around an anticlinal. Two gangways are open<br />

on <strong>the</strong> west panel. The north dip is cxtensiveh" worked. The lower lift<br />

gangways are tolerably well worked out. A counter-lift is now ready on<br />

<strong>the</strong> east, intending to work out <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> by this counter. 32 breasts are<br />

open in its eastern panel. A 20-horse power fan is in use, with satisfactory<br />

results. The general condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colliery and all its appointments<br />

cannot be excelled. 48,855 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> had been mined ; 180 men and 60<br />

bo3'S are employed. The breaker received a now addition, which will increase<br />

<strong>the</strong> facilities <strong>of</strong> preparing <strong>coal</strong> 50 per cent. Pumping engines have
