OF THE INSPECTOR OF COAL MINES OF THE WYOMING COAL<br />

FIELD, LYING EAST OF AND INCLUDING JENKINS TOWN-<br />

SHIP, FOR THE YEAR 18T5.<br />

His Excellency, John F. IIartranft,<br />

Governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gommoniveallh <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania :<br />

Sir:—In compliance with <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> an act <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Assembly,<br />

approved <strong>the</strong> third day <strong>of</strong> March, A. D. 1870, providing for <strong>the</strong><br />

health and safety <strong>of</strong> persons employed in <strong>coal</strong> mines, &c., I have <strong>the</strong> honor<br />

to herewith submit my report for <strong>the</strong> year ending <strong>the</strong> Slst day <strong>of</strong> December,<br />

1875.<br />

The total number <strong>of</strong> casualties in <strong>the</strong> j'ear 1874 was 158, 69 deaths and<br />

89 accidents; and in 1875 was 164, 62 deaths and 102 accidents, which<br />

were not fatal, showing a decrease <strong>of</strong> 7 deaths and an increase <strong>of</strong> 13 accidents<br />

in 1875.<br />

The total number <strong>of</strong> tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined in <strong>the</strong> year 1874 was 6,35t,879.<br />

There was one death to every 92, 143 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined, one widow to every<br />

167,313 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined, one orphan to every 56,767 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined,<br />

and one accident to every 40,229 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined. The total number <strong>of</strong><br />

tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined in 1875 was 7,956,452. Theje was one death to every<br />

128,330 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined ; <strong>the</strong>re was one widow to every 221,012 tons<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined, one orphan to every 67,428 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined, and one accident<br />

to every 78,004 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mined.<br />

By reference to <strong>the</strong> tabulated tables annexed you will find all o<strong>the</strong>r matters<br />

<strong>of</strong> interest detailed in full.<br />
